Tree Update

“I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree

You may or may not remember the start of the Joyce Kilmer poem about trees but if you are a fan of healthy, beautiful trees, here are some town updates about our trees – going and coming and, hopefully, staying healthy:

Tree Cutting

Earlier this year, road agent Jeff St. Jean worked with Urban Tree Service to identify almost 60 trees in the town’s rights of way that are dead.   While the Board can’t address all of these trees this year, we have contracted with Urban Tree Service to remove approximately 20 of them.    From 11/14-11/18, teams from Urban Tree will be taking down dead trees, mostly on the following roads:  Highland, Baer, Clement, Pine and Locust.   The Board will be continuing its dead-tree pruning in 2017.

Tree Planting

In case you haven’t noticed, some new trees have sprung up around town:  there are 4 new trees planted along Main Street in the State’s right of way near Paul’s Integrity Garage, a couple of new trees by the mills and most recently, a new tree in Morton Park (the small park across by the Fire Department, abutting the cemetery).    The town thanks its generous resident (who prefers to remain anonymous) for these lovely additions to our streetscapes.

Please stay tuned for more information on a tree-planting initiative recently started by the RGLSC a/k/the Garden Club with the help of Robin Aikman, the garden club’s newest Board member.

There will be a parking ban in effect on October 31st from 7.30am till 6pm in the down town area. This will include: Front Street, South Street, Cross Street, Second Street, Third Street and Fourth Street. This will be to do line striping on the newly paved roads.

10 Year Road Plan: MEETING NOTICE

The Select Board and Road Agent Jeff St. Jean have been working with the Strafford Regional Planning Commission to pilot the Road Surface Management Systems (RSMS) developed by UNH’s Technology Transfer Center. A ten-year road plan (draft) was reviewed by the board and we are now ready to share this draft with the public.

The Select Board will host a public information session on the road plan on October 27, 6:30 pm at the Town Hall.

The plan is available on the town website.

Turcotte Field Work October 19th

A company called Forest Savers from Vermont will be cleaning up the edges of the Turcotte Field on Wednesday Oct. 19th. They will be grinding the small stumps left over from the forest harvest that we had done last winter. They will also be cutting and grinding the brush and the invasive plants around the field. There is also a small patch of woods in the field that they will remove.

The Conservation Commission is trying to preserve the field to the way it was in the past when the Stockdale family was farming in the town of Rollinsford.

Any one walking or riding out there on this day should be very careful because the machinery will be very noisy and the operators may not have very good visibility.

Activities bus from Marshwood High and Middle Schools will resume Oct. 24

To parents of Rollinsford Marshwood Middle and High School students,

The school board voted this week to reinstate the activities bus, also known as the “late bus,” which picks up students from Marshwood Middle and High Schools at roughly 4:05 and brings them to their homes. The bus will resume on Oct. 24 and is guaranteed to run through Feb. 2, 2017.
During this time the school board will collect ridership numbers, gather information about alternative funding possibilities, and request quotes for future costs from First Student. At the January 2017 school board meeting, the board will review the information gathered and conduct another vote to determine whether to continue the bus.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email the school board or come to our next meeting.

Sincerely, The Rollinsford School Board
